Upgraded National Road 5 Now Open Between Battambang and Serey Sophorn

Battambang: The Ministry of Public Works has opened the newly-completed section of National Road 5 between Battambang and Serey Sophorn in Banteay Meanchey. On behalf of Public Works Minister, Sun Chantol, Secretary of State in the Ministry of Public Works and Transport and Chairman of the National Road 5 Construction Project, Touch Chankosal, conducted the final inspection and presided over the handover on Thursday morning.

The stretch of National Road 5 from Battambang to Serey Sophorn runs for a total of 84.74 kilometres. Construction has taken some 36 months at a cost of $143 million. The project was divided into two parts. The first was built by the Tekken-Taiyo JV affiliate, with the second constructed by the Daiho-Asanuma JV Group. The groundbreaking ceremony was held on 26 March 2018 in the presence of Prime Minister Hun Sen.

Now that the road is open, the two construction companies are responsible for maintenance for a period of one year. Toch Chankosal urged them to ensure that all minor damage be repaired so as to keep the road in the best condition.
